Webcam Microphone Test

Most webcams include a built-in microphone, but it's often an afterthought compared to the camera lens, resulting in tinny, quiet, or noisy audio. Before a livestream, video call, or recording, it's worth confirming your webcam's mic actually sounds acceptable rather than assuming the camera and microphone are equally good. This free browser test lets you hear your webcam audio in real time with no software install.

   Select your webcam as the input device

   In your operating system's sound settings, confirm the webcam is listed as an available input device and select it explicitly if you have multiple microphones connected.

   Position the webcam correctly

   Most webcam microphones are omnidirectional and pick up more background noise the farther you sit. Move closer or reduce room echo for clearer results during the test.

   Compare against your built-in laptop microphone

   Run the test with the webcam selected, then switch to your laptop's internal microphone, to compare clarity and decide which sounds better for calls or recordings.

   Check USB connection and drivers

   Webcams connected through USB hubs or extension cables sometimes lose audio quality or drop out. Connect directly to a USB port on your computer and retest if issues appear.

   Consider a dedicated microphone if quality is poor

   If the webcam's built-in mic sounds thin or noisy even after adjustments, a separate USB microphone paired with the webcam for video usually gives noticeably better audio.
