Listen to your voice and record audio

Nothing kills momentum in a Discord voice channel like joining and immediately hearing 'can you hear me?' Discord has its own input device selection separate from your operating system, so a mic that works everywhere else can still be silent in Discord. Run this free browser test first to confirm your hardware and levels are solid before you ever open the app.

  1. 1

    Open Voice & Video settings

Go to User Settings (gear icon) > Voice & Video and check the Input Device dropdown to confirm it matches the microphone you actually want to use.

  2. 2

Use the built-in mic test button

Click 'Let's Check' under the Input Sensitivity section and speak normally; the green meter should move well past the sensitivity threshold line.

  3. 3

Adjust input sensitivity or use voice activity

If Discord cuts off words, switch from Voice Activity to Push to Talk, or manually lower the automatic sensitivity threshold so quieter speech still triggers transmission.

  4. 4

    Check server-specific voice permissions

Some servers mute new members by default. Right-click your username in the member list and confirm you aren't server-muted or deafened before assuming it's a hardware issue.

  5. 5

Disable Krisp noise suppression if voice cuts out

Discord's built-in noise suppression (Krisp) can occasionally clip quiet audio. Toggle it off under Voice & Video to see if your voice comes through more consistently.
