Listen to your voice and record audio

iPhones generally have reliable microphones, but privacy permissions, case obstructions, and Bluetooth accessories can all interfere with audio input in ways that aren't always obvious. Before an important FaceTime call or voice recording, check your iPhone's microphone directly in Safari, free and without downloading any app from the App Store. It only takes a few seconds.

  1. 1

    Allow microphone access in Safari

When Safari prompts for microphone permission, tap Allow. If you previously blocked it, go to Settings > Safari > Microphone and change the setting to Ask or Allow.

  2. 2

    Check Privacy microphone settings

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm Safari has access enabled, since a disabled toggle here silently blocks all browser-based audio input.

  3. 3

Remove the case and check the microphone opening

Inspect the small microphone holes near the bottom speaker and near the camera for dust or lint, and remove any case that might be covering them.

  4. 4

    Disconnect Bluetooth accessories

AirPods or other Bluetooth headsets can automatically become the active microphone. Disconnect them temporarily to test the iPhone's built-in microphone directly.

  5. 5

Restart the iPhone if input stays silent

A restart clears temporary audio session conflicts, particularly if another app recently used the microphone and didn't release it properly.
